What is Pragmatics?

Pragmatics refers to the social use of language whether it is with peers, family, or teachers.

  • Social greetings

  • Taking turns in conversation

  • Staying on topic

  • Appropriate personal space

  • Use of facial expressions

  • Eye contact

  • Telling stories in an organized fashion

  • Changing their language depending on their audience (i.e. talking to a baby vs. adult)
