What is Fluency?

Fluency refers to the smoothness, speed, and effort of speech.

What is a Fluency Disorder?

A fluency disorder occurs when the fluency of speech is disrupted. The most common fluency disorder is stuttering. 

Characteristics of Stuttering

  • Repeating words or parts of words.

  • Prolonging a sound in a word.

  • Blocking (freezing during speech)

  • Physical tension

  • Secondary behaviors (i.e. blinking, facial grimaces, tapping of hand/feet)

  • Avoiding speaking situations

  • Family history of stuttering
